Did you know? That over at Epcot there is an entire pavilion that basically stays unused an empty throughout much of the year? Sadly it didn’t use to always be that way. The Wonders of Life pavilion was very much alive when it opened October 19, 1989, and was sponsored by MetLife. The Pavilion resided in future world and was located right next to Horizons, its primary focus to promote knowledge about health and the body and how to maintain it. Wonders of Life opened with 2 major attractions Body Wars and Cranium Command (More in detail posts about those later).
Body Wars was a Star tours type simulator attraction through the human body, and Cranium Command was a show with animatronics that give an imaginative view on how your brain operated. Besides those two attractions there were other minor things to do such as Goofy about health, The Making of Me (Starring Martin Short), Sensory Funhouse, Coach’s Corner, Fitness Fairgrounds, Frontiers of Medicine, and the Wonder Cycles. Not to mention the show Anatomical Players.
So as you can see this pavilion was huge and full of things to do for the average Epcot guest. An entire pavilion full of attractions and ways to spend time at Epcot, something that Future World desperately needs today considering its lack of attractions. The Pavilion was ultimately shut down in 2007 and shuttered for what seemed like for good. Until it reopened later that year as a festival center, and nothing more. The inside seemed hollow as most of its iconic areas were all gutted out and in their place merchandise locations for the festivals. Body wars and Cranium Command were both shuttered and left behind backstage walls to rot where they still sit today unused and decaying.
However twice every year guests get a rare chance to enter this shuttered pavilion when the Food and wine festival and the Flower and garden Festival occur. As the Pavilion is used as the main festival center. So next time you go see if you can see the old sights of the Wonders of life and how it used to be. Extra points if you can find the old entrances for Cranium Command and Body Wars! I hope one day both the Imagination pavilion and Wonders of life receive they love they both deserve as they are aren’t even close to reaching their potentials at the moment. Both pavilions are in this weird hollow state of purgatorium where they really just serve as hollow reminders of what once was.
